Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up by Government of India on 2nd May, 1963 with a focus on foreign trade related research and training. After 50 years of its existence, the Institute has broadened the scope and dimensions of its academic activities covering the entire gamut of international business. Today, the Institute is widely recognized for its knowledge and resource base, rich heritage and for strong alumni network both in India and abroad. In recognition of its all round achievements, the Institute was given the status of “Deemed University” in May 2002 by University Grants Commission (UGC) enabling it to award degrees and start its own doctoral programme. On the basis of review by the Expert Committee constituted by UGC, IIFT has been granted “Deemed University” status on a permanent basis in February, 2012. The Institute enjoys close and enduring linkages with the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India and has established ties with leading Industrial and Trading Houses and Academic Institutions, both in India and abroad. These linkages have helped the Institute to expand its activities relating to training & research and addressing critical issues of international business in a holistic manner. The Board of Management is the principal organ of Management and principal executive body of the Institute. The BoM consists of 11 members and is headed by the Director of the Institute. The Academic Council is the principal academic body of the Institute which is responsible for the maintenance of standards of teaching, research and training, approval of syllabus, co-ordination of research activities, examinations and tests within the Institute. The Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, is the Chairman of the Institute. The Director of the Institute is the Principal Executive Officer of the Institute and exercises general supervision and control over the affairs of the Institute. Director is mainly responsible for implementation of the decisions of all the authorities of the Institute. Through its five academic divisions, namely, Graduate Studies Division (GSD), Research Division (RD), Management Development Programmes (MDPs) Division, International Collaboration and Capacity Development (ICCD) Division and International Projects Division (IPD). Each Division caters to competency development in a specific area and contributes to the overall growth of the Institute.
The Institute conducts different educational programmes which include Ph.D, Full Time and Part Time MBA(IB) Degree programmes, Executive Diploma Programmes and Certificate Programmes.

The International Collaborations & Capacity Development (ICCD) Division of IIFT plays an important role in the Institute through the following activities:
I. International Collaborations
IIFT has established academic ties with domestic and international universities / institutes to enable activities such as joint training and research programmes and student / faculty exchange. At present IIFT has collaborations with 27 universities / institutes across the world. Of these, 15 are in Europe and 07 are in Asia and 5 in other parts of the world.

Since the year 2008, the Institute has successfully conducted Twenty Eight Executive Development Programmes on International Business in various African Countries viz Ethiopia, Egypt, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Uganda, Senegal, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Mauritius, Seychelles, Togo, Tunisia, Ghana, Niger, Eritrea, Kenya, Gabon, Tanzania, Madagascar, Djibouti, Cape Verde, Somalia, Gambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
During April 2014 to December 2014, the following programmes have been conducted by IIFT in Africa :-

The Foreign Trade Library of IIFT is a fully Automated Library and is one of the largest of its kind (specializing in International Business) in India. It continued with its endeavor to add to its collection of specialized publications and expand and improve its services .Foreign Trade Library is a vast knowledge bank with an impressive collection of 1,01,521 resources that comprises 74,435 Book/ CD's-Volumes, 17,481 Bound Periodicals, and 452 Periodicals. In addition to these, its collection comprises Research Reports, Company Reports, CD-ROMs, Video cassettes in the field of Management, Foreign Trade and WTO related issues. Further, the Library continuously enriches itself with the publications from National and International Organizations such as United Nations Agencies, ITC/UNCTAD/WTO, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Ministries and Departments of Government of India, Export Promotion Councils, Commodity Boards and other Trade Promotion Organizations. The ‘WTO Resource Centre’ continues to provide information exclusively on WTO and related issues.
In order to facilitate online access to information, Library has also subscribed to trade related 23 online and offline databases like Blackwell Synergy (20 Journals), CMIEdatabase (Prowess, India Trade and Industry Outlook), Commodity Price Bulletin, DGCIS Statistics, EBSCO, Emerald Management extra, EIU online Epharmail, IMF Data ( BOP, DOT, IFS, Government Financial Statistics, Trade and Investment), India Stat.com, OECD ilibrary, Inside Trade.com, ISI Emerging Market (Asia Services), ITC Data(Investment Map, Standard Map, Trade Competitiveness Map, Trade Map), JSTOR, NextLinx (Trade Planner, Trade Wizard) , ProQuest, Science Direct (Economics Collection -106 Journals) Suns Magazine, World Bank Online Databases (ADI,GDF,GEM,WDI), WorldTrade Atlas (27Countries), WITS. These databases provide valuable information on Countries Studies; Statistical Data, Market Forecast, Market Reports; Annual Data of Companies; Stock Market; WTO related Disputes; Cases and day to day development in WTO; Indicators of different Countries; Data for Indian States; Foreign Trade; Regional Integration of India with different Countries etc. Library has also 24 online ejournals which are full text accessible e.g. China & World Economic, down to Earth, Foreign Policy, OPEC Energy Review, Sloan Management Solan Management Review etc. List of databases and e-journals are available on IIFT website (www.iift.edu).
Kolkata Centre Library
The library at Kolkata Campus is gradually growing with resources of traditional type as well as electronic and virtual information. It includes over 3300 books and CDs and around 100 national and international journals in the field of management and its related facets. Almost all business dailies are also available in its periodical section. The collection comprises of documents in the field of Management, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Marketing, International Trade, Psychology, Operation Research, Business Communication, Advertising and light readings etc. It is primarily intended for the faculty, students, scholars, staff members, consultants of the Institute. The library covers the resources available in languages like Bengali, Hindi, Spanish, German, Italian, French along with major resources in English. The collection is fully automated with the facility of Online Public Access Catalogue and the bar-coded circulation system. The library extends its services to its users throughout the year except the Government. holidays.
The Library is enriched with its virtual resources, called the -brary, which is accessible round the clock. A large number of full text journal articles, industry profile, country report, book, trade publication, newspaper, analytical commentary, annual reports, industry statistics and indicators, legislation, monetary data, news analysis, official gazette, press release, ranking and statistical data on Administrative Setup, Agriculture, Banks and Financial Institutions, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Companies, Cooperatives, Crime and Law, Demographics, Economy, Education, Electoral Data, Environment and Pollution, Foreign Trade, Forest and Wildlife, Geographical Data, Health, Housing, Industries, Insurance, Labour and Workforce, Market Forecast, Media, Meteorological Data, Mines and Minerals, Petroleum, Power, Social and Welfare Schemes, Sports, States and Union Territories, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport, Urban Areas, Villages for India as well for the rest of the countries of the world are available through the -brary.
PUBLICATIONS Foreign Trade Review
Foreign Trade Review (FTR) is a premier journal on International Economics published by IIFT which is well recognized in India and abroad in the field of international trade. Since 1966, 49 Volumes have been published with 4 issues per volume. Currently the journal is published and marketed by M/s. Sage India in print as well as electronic (online) version. The journal aims to publish both theoretical and empirical papers on any topic pertaining to Economics, International Trade, International Finance, International Marketing, IT, Consumer Behaviour, WTO issues and any other issue relating to cross border transaction in goods and services. In its more than four and half decades of existence, it has remained a platform for dissemination of in-depth analysis focusing on India’s integration with world economy and global trade. It publishes papers from various experts, academicians, researchers, policy makers and trade & industry having a track record of proven expertise on these critical issues.
Focus WTO, published by IIFT, is a quarterly journal devoted to WTO and related issues. Since 1999, the Institute has been publishing this journal. Each issue of Focus WTO is thematic. With the establishment of WTO, the entire dynamics and gamut of international trade have undergone a fundamental change. Analysis and information on WTO issues have become important while conducting international trade for many countries. The Institute took the initiative to provide and disseminate research and analytical inputs on WTO issues particularly focusing on how WTO helps, promotes, and affects exports and imports, and entire business operations and transactions for Indian trade and industry required to compete globally marked by uncertainty and volatility. The journal caters to the requirements of various government departments, academicians, policy makers and trade and industry.
Working Paper Series
The main aim of the working paper series of IIFT is to help faculty members share their research findings with professional colleagues in the pre-publication stage. The papers are published on-line and uploaded on IIFT website. The topics covered are : General Management, Marketing Management, Finance, Information and Technology, Quantitative Techniques, Economics, Trade Logistics & Documentation, etc. All faculty members of IIFT are eligible to submit working papers. Additionally, any scholar who has presented her/his paper in any of the IIFT campuses in a seminar/conference is also eligible to submit the paper as a working paper of IIFT. All working papers are refereed.
IIFT CAMPUS AT KOLKATA
Institute’s Kolkata campus, set up in 2006, is presently running from rented premises. Construction for the Institute’s Kolkata campus is at an advanced stage and it is expected that it will be operational by 31st July, 2015. Apart from the MBA full-time and part-time programmes, Kolkata campus offers various other Executive Programmes. The library at Kolkata Campus is gradually growing with resources of traditional type as well as electronic and virtual information. It includes over 3,300 books and CDs and around 100 national and international journals in the field of management and related facets.
The IT facilities at IIFT include state-of-the-art IT infrastructure. There is a 24 x 7 well equipped Computer lab exclusively for the students and for training & research activities of the Institute. The Computer lab for the students is open round-the-clock and have access to all IT facilities, including internet. IIFT has its own Data Centre equipped with Unified Storage, Virtualized Server Environment, Web Servers, E-mail Servers, etc. Institute is connected to internet through total 50 MBPS leased line with two backup ISPs on load balancing. Apart from this, IIFT also uses video conferencing facility to connect to different parts of the world. The Institute has a multi-tiered network infrastructure in place. Buildings inside the campus are well connected with fiber network. The network infrastructure is at a layer 3 switching level that helps inter-connect all components of the same together on one platform. Over 1,000 users have access to this network. Institute’s network is also supplemented with secured managed WiFi supporting 802.11n standards. Classrooms are equipped with PCs and LCD projectors. IIFT’s recent foray in the online education platform has been possible with the state-of-the-art IT infrastructure support being provided for the conduct of these online programmes. This infrastructure has enabled IIFT to conduct online sessions on a real time basis using broadband facility. IIFT has developed several enterprise applications in-house using .NET, ASP, Oracle and SQL platforms. These applications cater to on campus as well off campus programmes of the Institute. Some of these applications are:
a. Campus360 Solution: A fully integrated platform that provides convergence facility to the faculty with the students and the programme office.
b. Placement Portal: This caters to students during placement and it acts as a bridge between students and the companies.
c. Employee Information System: A complete repository of information related to employee from salary slip to personal details.
d. Result Processing and Grading: A solution to covert scores into letter grades and complete result processing activities.
e. Virtual Classrooms for various programmes: It includes courseware uploads, schedules, planners, feedback, quizzes, webisodes, etc.
CENTRES OF IIFT
Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT)
The Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT) has continued its activities related to policy research and capacity building for relevant technology identification, investments and assimilation by trade stakeholders in India. Select main activities by CITT during the year were as follows:
Centre for MSME Studies
· In this pursuit, Centre has established itself amongst prominent MSME clusters at PAN India level extending them handholding support towards internalisation of their domestic businesses by conducting market research; extending consultancy on product and market identification, solving trade related issues. In order to widen the reach; Centre had signed an MOU with CII as a joint initiative with one of the objectives as conducting Short Term Training Programs on Export Management, with special focus on first time exporters through conducting Online Sessions on Export Management. First series of webinar on “Doing Business with Emerging Markets” has already been initiated and Centre would extend this series to newer products and more number of markets along with handling hard core trade related issues as means to facilitate expansion plans of SMEs both in terms of products/markets and scalability.
· Centre had participated in various seminars on New Products and markets and export facilitation in collaboration with EPCH (Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts) both at Delhi as well as Kolkata.
· Centre has been instrumental towards carrying out research on pertinent issues hampering/promoting exports from the MSME sector. One of the most recent studies successfully completed by the centre was on “Trade impact of Unfair Competition Act (UCA) of US on Indian Manufacturing Sector” wherein MSME predominant sectors having trade advantage were identified. Centre plans for a rigorous awareness building exercise with MSME clusters in the identified sectors. The results of this study were submitted to Planning Commission. The latter had facilitated Centre towards disseminating the same amongst State Level Industry departments, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Textiles, Industry Associations and trade bodies. Planning Commission thereafter had invited State departments to assist IIFT to take the dissemination at state level. PC also would commission another research study on “Policy level interventions towards UCA branding amongst the SME clusters.
· Proposal submitted to EPCH to conduct the research study on Export opportunities to Focus and emerging markets including China, LAC, ASEAN, CIC, Middle East and Africa.
· Centre participated in the Policy Roundtable on EXIM Policy for MSMEs conducted by CII on 28th July 2014. The white paper developed by the Centre highlighted pointers proposed to be included in the New Foreign Trade Policy.
· The Center is establishing a Regional MSME Center at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh funded by the Ministry and with the active cooperation of Himachal Government. This Centre will help to promote exports from MSME units of the State by maintaining Capacity Development Programmes, Export Advisory Programme, up gradation of trade support services, introduction of ‘Benefits of Exporting Campaign targeting potential exporters and Market Information services. In this context following initiatives have been taken:
o Centre has initiated talks with Himachal Institute of Public Administration (HIPA) for allocation of space for the said centre within their campus.
o Setting up soft and hard infrastructural arrangements at HIPA to commence Phase I activities are going on.
o Blue print towards action plan to assess export opportunities for Himachal and status of export infrastructure in the state with an aim to promote state level exports by setting up an Export Facilitation Centre in Himachal Pradesh is under progress.
o A separate virtual Market Information Cell and the website along with the brochure is almost complete.
Centre for WTO Studies
The activities undertaken by the Centre for WTO Studies seek to achieve three broad objectives: (i) to assist India’s trade negotiators and policy makers in participating effectively in the WTO and at the related multilateral trade negotiations; (ii) to enhance the understanding of key trade issues among stakeholders through outreach and dissemination activities; and (iii) to develop capacities within India and in other developing countries for analysing WTO and other trade-related issues through training programmes. Following are some of the key achievements of the Centre for WTO Studies during 2014-15 (till November 2014)
